Discontinued Models and the Keurigs that have replaced them
The Keurig coffee maker range has certainly seen some changes as models have come and gone. This can just add to the confusion of what to buy. So here we set out what has been taken out of production and what it has been replaced with.
- The entire B series the company launched with. This was replaced by the 1.0 series K range — the B model number was replaced by the same K model number.
- The entire 2.0 series — except the K250 was replaced by the K-Select and K-elite
- The K10 in the 1.0 series was replaced by the K15.
- The K45 in the 1.0 series was replaced by the K55.
- The K60 in the 1.0 series was replaced by the K65 which has also been discontinued.
- The Keurig K300 has been discontinued.
- The Keurig K450 has been replaced by the K475 model.
Keurig 1.0 vs 2.0 : Keurig “Generations” & Discontinued Models
Keurig is actually a company which is 20 years old. Though it may feel like their products are very new to the market, they have been in the coffee industry a long time.
Previous incarnations include the “B-Series” and the “Vue” models. These have been discontinued, leaving the “K-Series” as making up the current available models.
Within the Keurig K-Series there are two types of model. It helps to think of them as generations.
These are the 1.0 models of coffee machine (the first generation) and the 2.0. Both still have models which are in production. Realistically, the changes in general aren’t massive.
Both still do a very similar job in terms of brewing coffee. The main changes were to do with the pods which the coffee makers take.
The 1.0 generation allowed the use of pretty much any K-Cup or compatible pods. Companies were able to make their own versions and these would work absolutely fine in a 1.0 machine.
When the 2.0 range came out, this became far more difficult. Keurig introduced technology which meant these types of ‘off-brand’ coffee were blocked from working.
There were hacks and workarounds, but this brought a lot of criticism for the brand.
The 2.0 range however, addressed much of the criticism the brand gets around use of plastic and the waste created via the method of brewing.
The answer saw the introduction of the “My K-Cup”, a reusable cup which slots into the usual compartment for the K-Cup and allows you to brew using your own ground coffee. This cuts down vastly on the amount of packaging waste.
The most modern products on the market including the K-Select and K-Elite have returned to being able to use any pod, and the features continue to grow along with the range.
An iced coffee mode is among the newest features to join strength control to give you different ways to alter your brew.
Smallest and Most Portable Keurig

The premise behind a Keurig is pretty simple. Each of the coffee makers takes pods which contain ground coffee, hot water is then pushed through, brewing a fresh cup of coffee in a process which takes just a minute or two (and sometimes less).
In terms of ease of use, there aren’t many simpler ways to get a coffee which is a big upgrade on instant coffee. This is why Keurigs have become so popular in kitchens and offices the world over.
The fact that there are so many models means a lot of confusion when it comes to which to buy and which features are useful for your needs.
Water Reservoir and Filter
Other than your pod, the only thing you need to add to the machine is water. Most coffee machines have some sort of water reservoir, but not all.
Keurigs range has some mini coffee makers such as the K10 which do not have a reservoir and require the water for each individual coffee to be put in at the time of brewing.
The machines which do have water reservoirs vary hugely in terms of capacity. Some can can hold around 40 oz, whereas the larger models in the range can hold more than double this amount.
Having a large capacity for water means you aren’t constantly refilling the machine, perfect for a machine which sees a lot of use throughout the day.
The size of reservoir required will also depend on the size of the coffees you are making. Everything from a small 4 oz serving to massive 30 oz carafes can be made in a Keurig coffee maker.
The filter is another feature related to water and a consideration when choosing a coffee machine. Some come with a filter, some don’t.
Most have a way a filter can be attached, even if they don’t ship with one when you purchase.
Filters are a great way to improve the purity of water, and while the main benefit is taste, this can also mean your machine is more likely to last far longer.
Pods and Pod Sizes
The “Pods” are the little packages of coffee which slot perfectly into your Keurig. One is required for every brew. Pods are a cause of some controversy in the Keurig range.
For a time, the environmental impact was heavily criticized, but Keurig have made big steps to ensure all of their pods are eco-friendly in the future.
Pods come in different varieties which are designed to tie in with the size of brew. The standard K-Cup is designed for single brews, but other pods are available for larger sizes. The most common pod types are:
- K-Cup: Suitable for single servings from 4 oz to 10 oz.
- K-Mug: Normally used for sizes 12 oz to 16 oz.
- K-Carafe: For batch brews and sizes from 24 oz to 30 oz.
Another type of pod which is available is the reusable “My K-Cup”. As well as this, there are also reusable pods available which aren’t made by Keurig.
Whether ‘compatible’ pods work will depend on the generation of Keurig your machine is in. More on generations later, but generally, generation 1.0 will allow use of compatible pods.
Controls and Features
The control panel ties in closely with the features of your Keurig, and is likely to play a big part in your buying decision.
So what do we mean by features? In coffee machine language, features are basically any choice you can make to let you alter the brew of the coffee.
These are all controlled by a panel on the Keurig, either by buttons or by display screen.
Some common features of Keurigs are listed below. Only you will know which are useful to you and which are unlikely to be on your shopping list!
- Brew sizes: Most keurigs will give you some control over the size of your brew, there may be two or three options or up to 10 different choices.
- Strength settings: A relatively new addition to the range, strength settings are the option to choose how strong you want your cup of coffee.
- Favorite settings: Being able to save your favorite brew settings and return to them at a later date.
- Auto on/off: Most Keurigs come with the ability to program automatically turning on and off when in use or when not required.
- Iced mode: Some Keurig coffee makers have started to come with extra features such as the ability to brew a coffee specifically to be served over ice.
- “Frothy” and barista styles: Some of the high level commercial Keurigs offer the ability to make more barista style coffees such as lattes or cappuccino.
- High altitude settings: Allowing for easier brewing at low temperatures and high altitude and saving on the electricity consumed.
Reading through the features, you will probably have some idea of which appeal. Some may be overkill, some might be exactly what you are looking for.

Price is bound to play a part. The difference in price between the mini models of Keurig with limited features and the all-singing, all-dancing, top of the line models is huge.

Cheapest Keurig Coffee Makers
Well, you love your coffee but that doesn’t mean you want to pay more than you need to for a coffee maker. Here are the machines with the best prices.
K-Mini and K-Mini Plus
The slimmest and the cheapest is the brand new K-Mini. Great if you have little space or want something portable. This model doesn’t have a water reservoir — you simply fill it up for each brew for any cup size from 6-12oz. You pay more for the Plus model, but it comes with a pod storage unit that fits in the machine. It comes in a choice of black or red.
K50 1.0 series Classic
This brews three cup sizes, 6oz, 8oz and 10oz, and has a useful 48oz water reservoir. You also get a selection of tea, cocoa, specialty and iced beverages. You can find it in four colors. It’s a great machine for anyone who wants great coffee and no extras.
K200 2.0 series Plus
This is also a good price. It is a slim machine that can serve 10 different brew sizes for cups, mugs and carafes. Look out for the limited edition cashmere grey — very cool. If you expect to be serving coffee to a few people at once, this is a good choice.
K55 1.0 series Elite
Probably the best-selling budget model, this is a great option if you want affordability with few extras. It has three brew size options, a 48oz reservoir and it comes with Quiet Brew Technology and a K-Cup variety pack.

Models that have the largest brewing size
Brew sizes comes in four different flavours: up to 10oz, up to 12oz, up to 18oz and up to 30oz.
The largest cup size is 18oz and all the models that give you this whopping cup of coffee also give you the choice of a 4oz, 6oz, 8oz, 10oz, 12oz, 14oz, and 16oz. But there are some differences.
The V600 and V700 are both domestic models, but while the V600 water reservoir is 60oz, the V700 is slightly larger at 74oz. The V1200 and V1255, suitable for commercial use, both have an 80oz water reservoir and can take coffee grounds as well as pods. There’s little, if any, difference between them.
The biggest brewers, however, are the 30oz monsters for filling up your carafe. They are all part of the Keurig 2.0 series. Because they take the K-Cup, K-Mug and K-Carafe coffee pods, they have brew-size choices of 4oz, 6oz, 8oz, 10oz, 12oz, 14oz, 16oz, 22oz, 26oz, and 30 oz. The major difference between them is their water reservoir size.
- The K200 and K250 both have a 40oz water reservoir and neither have temperature control. The K200 comes with extra charcoal filter and descaling solution.
- The K300 and K350 both have a 60oz reservoir and come with a carafe. The K300 has an interactive touch screen feature.
- For a 70oz water reservoir, there is the K425, which also has temperature control and color interface, the K450, which comes with a water filter starter kit, and the K475. This one doesn’t come with a carafe, though.
- The biggest brewers with the biggest water reservoir are the K525, K545, K550 and K575. They all hold a full 80oz of water, so you don’t have to fill them up so often. The K545 has a large screen and comes with a reusable My Cup pod. The K575 doesn’t come with a carafe, but it has the largest color touch screen display of all the 2.0 series machines.

Best Keurig For Home Use – Keurig K55
The Keurig K55 is one of the highest selling coffee makers in the brands history. Although not the newest, it certainly has a good blend of features and affordability. So why is this recommended for home use?
While not packed full with some of the features we see on offer right at the high end of the market, the K55 has plenty for most of us to be excited by.
It offers coffee in individual servings of 6 Oz, 8 Oz and 10 Oz and while it doesn’t have the strength control or iced functions we’re seeing in newer products, it still brews a great cup of coffee.
The fact it is from the 1.0 elite range means that it is one of the models which can benefit from the use of unbranded K-Cups.
Not something all of us will be excited about, but it is a way to be eco friendly, using reusable K-Cups or at least recyclable models.
The K55 has button controls rather than the LCD panel design we’re starting to see in some of the other models (we’ll explore this later).
The touchscreen designs are nice, but for most of us there is no issue in using a button design, especially if it means saving on the cost of the machine.
The buttons are very simple to follow, and it still has indicators for when you need to refill the water.
The main upgrade from the basic ‘mini’ options in the Keurig range such as the K10 is the fact that this has a water reservoir, meaning you can hold and filter water on the machine.
There is no filter included, but this is very easy to add on to your K55. Combine a filter with the ability to descale the K55 with a descaling kit available from Keurig, and you can extend the lifespan of your coffee machine.
The K55 is fairly basic by the standards of the Keurig range, but the good features combined with the value for money on offer make it a great option for home brewing.
Pro tip: If you are looking at the K45 or K50, this is a very similar model which can get confusing. The features are very similar but this has taken over from previous iterations on the market.
Keurig K15 Single Serve Compact Coffee Maker
The smallest models of Keurig don’t offer a huge amount in terms of features. If you are looking for a coffee maker with a lot of flexibility, stay away, but if you are looking for something you can take out and about with you then the K15 is the Keurig to look at.
The portability of these very compact machines is virtually unrivalled. This has made the small coffee machines such as this, and the older version, the K10, quite popular.
Uses include a coffee machine for your own desk at the office, taking to a dorm room at college or even having in your camper van!
The dimensions (6.9”³W x 10.7”³D x 10.8”³W) are pretty much small enough to take with you wherever you have access to power and water. Even the power cord has been designed in a way that is easy to fold it away.
There are a few downsides to the model, and to say its features are basic would be a real understatement. There are very few options available, and though it can brew in 6 Oz, 8 Oz or 10 Oz brew settings, many have reported that increasing the size does weaken the brew somewhat.
Another downside is the lack of any sort of water reservoir. This coffee machine can only hold enough water to make one cup of coffee.
While it probably won’t win in a 1 to 1 battle with any other Keurig on features, the K15 is indisputably the most portable coffee machine. If this is your main criteria then look no further.
If you are looking into the differences between this and the K10, there are very few except for ironed out bugs and a slightly more modern design.
Keurig K250 – Keurig 2.0 Model
The K250 is one of the best models in the K 2.0 series, with a great balance between features and value. While similar in size as something like the K50, this has become very popular due to the added options to its 1.0 competitors.
This can brew in a huge variety of sizes, and allows you to use the K-Carafe as well as the K-Cup.
This means that brews up to an incredible 30 Oz are on offer. 30 Oz isn’t recommended for a single serving, but if you regularly drink coffee with others this can be perfect, making the K250 a popular model for those who regularly have guests at home or in offices. Serving a Carafe of coffee can be great for meetings, for instance.
This was one of the first Keurigs to bring the strength control option. This is a great way to personalize your coffee, and give it a little boost.
Some have complained in other models that the bigger brews lose a little bit of strength, but this can be combated with strength controls.
Another big upgrade from many of the 1.0 models is the LCD control. This is easy to use and allows you easily to control all of the new options available to you.
This model also has an included water filter (it has a smaller sibling, the K200, which doesn’t offer this). However, the smaller 40 Oz water reservoir has come in for a little criticism.
If you were to brew a 30 Oz carafe as is possible with this, then most of your water is used up in one go.
All-in-all, if you are looking for brew strength controls and plenty of options in terms of brew sizes, you can’t go wrong with the K250, as long as you can put up with a 40 Oz water reservoir. If you need bigger than this, there are other options…
Keurig K575 – Keurig 2.0 Model
Another 2.0 model which we highly recommend, this has a lot of similarities with the K250, and one big difference, it contains double the water in its reservoir.
The water reservoir is something more in line with the capacity you might hope for if you are regularly making large amounts of coffee.
If you plan on brewing a couple of Carafes every day then with the K250 you will have to refill your reservoir, whereas this can handle multiple batch brews.
The touch screen panel is signature of the 2.0 range, and keeps the ease-of-use while giving a more modern feel to the Keurig. The extra large display is simple to navigate in spite of all the options added in the K500 range.
These features include the 10 different brew sizes, strength and a clock. Although the other features (customizable wallpaper and a night light) are great little extras, most are in agreement that these are far from essential when it comes to making good coffee!
It is hard to mention any of the 2.0 models without mentioning the fact that you are a little more restricted due to only being able to use official Keurig K-Pods and K-Carafes.
If you plan on using the reusable “My K-Cup” this isn’t a disadvantage, but for using pods it can be frustrating.
Because of the large size and huge amount of features and controls, you will end up spending more to get the K575 than most other Keurigs.
However, if you love gadgets and the controls mentioned appeal to you then it can certainly be worth it.
Being able to brew lots of coffee at a time, with size and strength settings is a huge draw for any of us and the K575 does it brilliantly.
Compare Keurig 2.0 models
The Keurig 2.0 series was a bit controversial and criticised for including a scanning technology that prevented the use of other coffee pod brands. The series has been discontinued, except for the K250, but you may still find them for sale.
K140 and K145
A 2.0 Commercial model for small offices. It takes licensed K-Cups in three sizes and has a 48oz water reservoir. A compatible water filter is available. It doesn’t have temperature or strength control, but does have button controls and indicator lights.
K150
A 2.0 Commercial model that also suits the home. It takes licensed K-Cups in five sizes and has a 90oz water reservoir. A compatible water filter is available. It has temperature control, but no strength control. It comes with a color touch screen and brew button. It has a direct water facility.
K155
The same spec as the K150 but without the direct water facility.
K200
A 2.0 Plus model that takes K-Cup, K-Mug, K-Vue, K-Carafe pods and My K-Cup. It gives a choice of 10 brew sizes, up to carafe sizes, though the model does not come with a carafe. Includes a 40oz water reservoir. A compatible water filter is available. There’s no temperature control but it does have strength control. The display is a 2.4” black and white LCD.
K250

The 1.0 series of models lets users choose any pod. They all take both licensed and unlicensed K-Cups and My K-Cups. So what’s the difference?
K10
A 1.0 Classic model with three cup sizes, 6, 8 and 10oz. There’s no water reservoir (you fill it up for each brew), no water filter, and no temperature or strength control. But it’s compact at 6.9” wide and weighs in at just 8.82lbs.
K15
The same as the K10 but comes in a choice of four colors.
K40
A 1.0 Elite model for those who want simple basics. Three cups sizes, a 48oz water reservoir and is compatible with a filter kit. No temperature or strength control. LED indicators tell you when to add water and descale.

Keurig B Series
The B series was Keurig’s first line of machines and was discontinued when the company re-branded with the K series. But you can still find them around on eBay or Amazon.
Below is a brief description of the features. So if it doesn’t mention water reservoir, temperature or strength control, or water filter then it doesn’t have one.
They all take unlicensed K-Cups and Keurig 2.0 licensed K-Cups, and none of them come with a water filter, although a compatible water filter is available for all models except the B31.
B31
This was replaced by the K15. Small and compact it gives three cup sizes, 6, 8 and 10oz. It also takes the reusable My-Cup pods. The display has LED indicators.
B40
Much the same as the K40, although it has just two brew sizes, 8 and 10oz. It has a 48oz water reservoir. Its features include Quiet Brew Technology, a water level indicator, and it comes with a K-Cup variety pack. The display has LED indicators.
B44

Another 1.0 Platinum this time with dark mocha paneling. Apart from that it’s pretty much the same as the B70.

Apart from the maximum 10oz brew size, this 1.0 Select model is much the same as other B70s and K70s. K150
A 1.0 Commercial, heavy duty brewer for large offices, it has five brew sizes up to 12oz and 90oz water reservoir, with the option of direct water supply plumbing, and a temperature control. The display has a color touch screen and brew button and is bilingual. It also comes with Quiet Brew Technology, a 24-hour programmable clock, and ANSI certification for foodservice use.

This 1.0 Commercial brewer is almost identical to the B150 except it does not have the option of direct plumbing.
B3000SE
The 1.0 Commercial brewer is for large offices or where you want to provide customer self-service. It brews 35-40 cups before you have to service it and plumbs straight into the water supply. With four brew sizes, temperature and strength control, a four button black and white, bilingual LCD display, and an automatic pod ejection system, it is ideal for high self-service demand. It is also ANSI certified for food service.
Keurig Vue Series
The Vue series was Keurig’s venture into café style coffee with a frother function and using K-Vue pods. It was only around a couple of years though before it got discontinued, along with the pods. But there are still many machines out there and you can buy a pod adaptor . This lets you use K-Cup pods or your own ground coffee in Vue machines, meaning you can still get a fresh cup of coffee.
Here are the five Vue machines.
V500: The most basic of the Vue series and great for café-style drinks. It has six brew sizes, 4oz to 16oz, and a 60oz water reservoir. And with temperature and strength control you can fully customize your coffee. It comes with a froth button for café frothiness and a function to brew over ice. It also has a water filter and a black and white touch screen display.
V600
This machine differs in two ways from the V500: you can brew an 18oz drink — taking the number of brew sizes to eight, and it comes with a variety K-Vue pack. Aside from that, they are the same.
V700
This is the V600 with two upgrades: a 74oz water reservoir, and a full color touchscreen.
V1200
With this model, the Vue series steps into the commercial coffee world. Most features are the same as the V700, but it has a larger water reservoir at 80oz, and a UL commercial certificate. It also sports the highly convenient “My Brew” technology that reads your pod and sets the controls — fool proof. It comes with the pod adaptor so you can use K-Cups and your own grounds.
V1255
The same model as the V1200. It replaced the V1255 when it was continued.
Rivo Espresso machine
Debuting in 2012, the Rivo Espresso was Keurig’s offering for single-serve espressos. But, along with the Vue series, the Rivo was discontinued just two years later, its pods, too. Unlike the Vue series, though, there is no adaptor to let you use other pods. But there are still some machines available — probably pretty cheap.
The Rivo R500 does give you a decent espresso though and in two sizes, 1.4oz and 2.8oz. It has a 60oz water reservoir, but no water filter, temperature control or strength control. But it does have a frother for your creamy drinks and it comes with a frother pitcher with lid.
Conclusion
We have selected the very best of the Keurig models, but the range is huge. Many of the products on this list have similar ‘sibling’ products.
For instance, the K575 has superseded the K525 and K550. This can make it very confusing to work out which features you need and how the models themselves differ. Our buying guide is designed to make that easier.
There is not really one specific “best” product in the range. No “one Keurig to rule them all”. What we have is a lot of different features and options, some of which will suit you down to the ground.
Whether you need a small, portable and modest Keurig or a huge model for brewing 30 Oz at a time, there’s something here for your scenario and you need to consider exactly what you need before deciding which works for you.
